Community Builders Program Fabricates Bench for the Aster Apartments
Recently, our Community Builders Program was tasked to fabricate a 12 foot long communal bench for the 56 unit Aster Apartments, a newly built affordable housing site located in South LA. The affordable housing site features both studio and one-bedroom apartments and includes on site facilities, in addition to being walking distance from the Blue Line.
The bench is made from American white oak acquired from Bohnhoff Lumber and powder coated steel tube legs. The bench sits in the main lobby of the building where residents have the opportunity to interact with one another while accessing their mailboxes or waiting to meet with the building manager. Together with our workshop leaders, the Artisans transported and assembled the bench on site.

Nick Offerman has partnered with Would Works, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit that teaches woodworking skills to at-risk Angelenos. These skills can lead to careers in industries like construction, set-building, and carpentry.
Beyond woodworking, Offerman highlights the “incredibly benevolent and warm humanism” at the heart of Would Works. "We're giving people … mental health, counseling, job counseling, life coaching. It's a place to say, 'Come on in, I see you, I care about you, I recognize the trouble you might be having. Here's a sandwich, here's a bowl of soup. Now, this is a hand plane,'" Offerman said.
